My first pet that I remember from my childhood was a dog (labrador-german shepard cross) called Ceasar. We had him for a number of years but he was always on a chain due to him always running away. I remember when we moved house one time, the first chance he got, he ran a couple of suburbs to find his way back to the old place. Very impressive. Naughty but impressive. He finally got picked up by my Uncle to go to a 'pig farm'. It was not till years later that I found out it was really the 'pig farm in the sky'. Even as a teenager, I did not take it well. OK, lets move on.
Over the years, I had a number of creepy pets that I liked to catch from the rivers and ponds. I had frogs for a while until they escaped. My mother was finding frog skeletons around the house for months. I also had what I called 'creepy crawlies'. They were like little crayfish or lobsters I guess. I did not have those ones very long, as they did not take too kindly to the still water of my little fish tank. Oooppppps.
We had a cat called Bonnie. Her name came about cause we got her on the same day my fathers Triumph Bonniville motorcycle was stolen. Our cat did well to make it through its first day at our house. She went on to live for over 21 years. Towards the last few years, ill healthy ment that she started to smell so she earned the name 'smelly cat' like the song by the same name off the hit TV show 'Friends'. My wife and I joked that she had actually died years ago. She had just forgotten to fall over.
Another family pet was a german shepard called Zeb. He was one of my favourites due to his extraordinarily large size. Unfortunately, I think it was also his downfall as he suffered from a bone disorder which caused him pain and was expected to shorten his life. In the end, we did not get to find out, cause he ran away one time when the gates were accidently left open, and he returned in ill health. He did not live the next 24 hours. I remember my father having to dig the hole to bury him. He was so big, it was like digging a hole for a horse. I think of him every 18th of Feburary which is the day that he died, and also the day before my birthday.
Our final family pet was another shepard called Emma. We got her as an adult and she was simply the sweetest. I did not take to her straight away unfortunately as I was still unset about Zeb, our previous dog and found her an insult to his memory. That did not last long though as it was hard to stay mad at such a beautiful dog, especially when you know she had done nothing wrong. We had her for a number of years and eventually moved to my aunty and uncles house after my parents separated. She lived to a ripe old age.
Thinking about it, we also had a budgie that died from stress when he went with me to my grandparents one night, but the details are a bit vague.
My children do not have any pets which is sad, but we intend to get a Beagle dog when we eventually buy our own house. Hopefully sometime soon. All kids should grow up with pets.
